Box Office Report - "Couples Retreat" advances, "An Education" sparkles, "Paranormal Activity" breaks records

The new island-comedy Couples Retreat hula-danced its way to number one with a higher than expected $35.3 million. The ensemble cast was led by Swingers actors Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, who both co-wrote the script. It was helmed by first-time director Peter Billingsley, who you may know as Ralphie--the kid that wanted a Red Rider B.B. Gun--in A Christmas Story.

Last weekend's #1 and #2 films slipped one slot each.  Zombieland, grossed out $15 million while the 3D animated food comedy Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ate up $12 million this weekend.

Besides Couples Retreat (or maybe instead of it) the box office story of the weekend was Paranormal Activity, which is doing the whole Blair Witch thing. The word-of-mouth on Paranormal Activity drove it to 4th place with a whopping $7 million in only 160 theaters, which is the highest-grossing weekend ever for a movie being shown in less than 200 theaters.  Watch for this film in weeks to come.
Also shining was possible Oscar bait An Education, starring Carey Mulligan and Alfred Molina, as it brought in nearly $160,000 on only four screens.  Keep an eye out for this film in case it expands, especially if it starts copping awards and other kudos in the next few months.
