A science behind online trailer views?

Silicon Alley Insider decided to construct a chart comparing the number of online trailer views to the box office success of a number of films that were recently released. Jennifer's Body had a lot of trailer views but did poorly at the box office where as Law Abiding Citizen and Couples Retreat did the opposite. It's hard to really gauge what this chart indicates if anything. For one there was definitely a lot more trailers for LAC and Couples Retreat on television than there were for Jennifers Body.

Perhaps so many people saw the trailers for Jennifers Body and Pandorum and they all realized they would not be worth watching? I think the negative effect of a bad trailer is more powerful than the positive effect of a bad trailer. Most films with "wow" trailers tend to have their audience built in already anyway.
