Portman Rolling
With Black Swan now having screened at both Venice and Telluride there is a lot of buzz about Natalie Portman's lead performance as the ballerina dealing with psychological issues. Just days after the buzz began it is being reported that she has been offered the lead role in Alfonso Cuaron's new film Gravity. Angelina Jolie had originally been cast in the role but dropped out.
Per the article,
"The $80 million 3D survival story, which Alfonso Cuaron will direct, centers on a woman stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew. Robert Downey Jr. already has committed to a supporting role, but much of the picture is devoted to the female character, who must survive a solitary ordeal much in the way Tom Hanks did in "Cast Away" or James Franco does in "127 Hours"'
At the very bottom of the same article it is said that Terrence Malick is also looking at Portman to star in a Jerry Lee Lewis biopic that he is working on with Brad Pitt. Interest from Alfonso Cuaron and Terrence Malick is when you know you're a premium talent. I loved Portman in The Professional as did every guy in my generation. However since then I have not been impressed with much of her work. I enjoyed V for Vendetta but more for Hugo Weaving than for Natalie. She was good in Closer but I found the film as a whole overrated. Let's not even bring up the new Star Wars trilogy. If Cuaron and Malick are really showing interest then the best is yet to come from this young actress.
